Baelo Claudia Roman Ruins - Travel to Spain

Roman-Ruins-Bolonia-Cadiz-Spain

Bolonia is the place where Baelo Claudio the roman ruins stand, amidst ancient columns on top of stone floors and on the other side of Mediterraneo Sea. Today we travel to Cádiz, Southern of Spain, and these ruins probably are the best preserved in this country. Date back to 100 BC and considered the largest metropolis of its time, this port town thrived for 500 years. It was before a major earthquake shook it.

How to arrive to the Roman Ruins of Baelo Claudia in Spain and what to see?

The closest airport to Bolonia is in Jerez (Cádiz) You can visit the ruins every day, except festives and the ticket is free if you are from an european city. Anyway, you will do the best if you visit the Andalucía Tourist Information Web for more details. Once there and before stepping onto the ancient grounds, you'll find a small museum where to discover the old Baelo daily life: the necropolis, the statues of goddesses and heroes, the old fishing hooks and mortar, small relics, jars and so. Already in the ruins there are some buildings from the Augustus era but most were built under the rein of Claudius, all in a perpendicular axis along the coastline. Its richness has the origin in the tuna fishery, the consequent salting industry and the sauce called "garum" which made that culinarium rage so much unleashed in the patrician tables. The forum, the capitol, the market, the thermal baths, the temple of Isis, the colonnade of the basilica (courtroom) presided over by Trajan (whose original statue is in the Cadiz Museum), the theater still in use (with capacity for 550 spectators) and of course, the wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean are other of its charms. Definitely a visit you can not miss.
