6 Things to See Central Park

alice-in-wonderland-in-central-park

There is so much to see in Central Park and all is free. I'm going to tell you the 6 things that I think are a must and because I love everything related to Alice in Wonderland, it was the first thing I looked for when I arrived to the wonderful rectangular park that stretches from 59th Street Up to 110. A green lung located between Fifth Avenue and Central Park West since the late nineteenth century. The sculpture of Alice has been there since 1959 because Delacorte, a NYC millionaire, wanted to honor the memory of his deceased wife, Margarita (a fervent admirer of Lewis Carroll's work). Indeed, its creator, Joseph de Creeft, was Spanish.

Bethesda-Terrace-NYC

Bethesda Terrace has been the witness of many stories. At first it was frequented by the high society, in the 60 hippie groups camped there and 10 years later it was a spot of traffic and drug consumption in the park. After restoration in the 90's, a new lifestyle came to her, doing justice to the four cherubim that compose it and that represent: peace, health, temperance and purity. The statistics say that after the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Bethesda is the one most photographed and shot in the cinemaIt is north of 72nd Street.

Statue of Hans Christian Andersen. It was inaugurated in 1956 and since then is a space dedicated to storytelling. Not in vain, the Danish writer and poet is famous for his children's stories. How many times have you heard or told the youngest of your surroundings "The Ugly Duckling" or "The Little Mermaid"? The bronze statue is the largest dedicated to Hans Christian Andersen around the world and I assure you that it is a pleasure to sit next to it and enjoy the moment with a reading of the copy of his story "The Ugly Duckling", that lies on his left knee. The duckling who, by the way, also listens intently to the reading of his story. Do you see him at my feet? The monument, located at 72nd Street and Fifth Avenue, was dedicated in 2002 to children who lost their parents in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Grand Army Plaza is in the south east of the park. What you see behind me is the General Sherman Monument which is part of the square along with the Pulitzer Fountain, an Italian-style fountain built in honor of the journalist Albert Pulitzer that is crowned by the bronze sculpture representing Pomona, The Goddess of abundance. This is the most used entrance of Central Park and the place where we can rent a horse cart to walk in the park. You'll find the Plaza strolling down Fifth Avenue in the direction of Central Park.

Strawberry Fields is a living memorial to the world-famous singer, songwriter and peace activist, John Lennon and was named after one of Lennon's favorite songs, "Strawberry Fields Forever" (1966) the song's title comes from an orphanage in Liverpool, England, where Lennon used to go to play with the children. The mosaic was created by Italian craftsmen and given as a gift by the city of Naples. It bears the word of another of Lennon's songs: "Imagine". Strawberry Fields was officially dedicated on October 9, 1985, the 45th anniversary of Lennon's birth. Lennon was killed in Central Park West, between the monument and the Dakota Building.

Statue dedicated to Columbus. At the south west entrance of the Park is the Km 0 of New York at Columbus Circle, on whose pedestal you can read an inscription that includes this description: "the Italian navigator, resident in America" And I wonder why the Spanish Goverment has not request a rectification to the City of New York ...
