Flamenco´s weekend in Seville: catalan style

Who said that flamenco is exclusive from the southern of Spain? Last Friday it became clear that this is a false belief in the Auditorio Rocío Jurado where there was a meeting with three classic of the rumba catalana: Kiko Veneno (although Seville adoption, "he said at the concert), Peret and Los Chichos For the same order they were entering the scene (although some daily newspaper was wrong in its chronicle, so I ask myself what it is publishing daily if the reporter didn´t stay to the end of the event so what he/she publishs is wrong!)

kiko+veneno

Kiko Veneno is from Figueras, but raised between Cadiz and Seville, and his band opened the night festive like a flash. Fast and bright. With his usual natural ways that connected with the audience from the first track and from there back and forth through songs from his new album "People say," and other classics like "I miss", "Memphis blues again" and some tributes to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. A concert that sparked the euphoria and dancing in the audience, crowding under the stage, despite the lively sound problems that mated instruments and despair both Kiko and those who succeeded him.

After Kiko, and half an hour with sound technicians going and coming across the stage, appeared on the scene Peret. 65 years old, the musician and singer was installed with a group of clappers, musicians and choirs to an desperate audience, due to the expected, that kept repeating his name in unison. He, more concerned than grateful, demanded silence in order to begin to sing because he had been warned before leaving the stage he had no more than half an hour to his show. What is even brought more cheers to the musician, an attitude that didn't stop throughout the concert. Between happy and angry (with the organization, of course) Peret gave their gypsy rumba to an uncertain night, full of threatening clouds that were never broken. And so his songs: "Borriquito like you" and "A tear fell in the sand" put the finishing touches on its way through Seville.

Los Chichos were the last to act and I would say the most acclaimed, mostly because being so late, we left the concert at about 4 am, it was obvious that the public was waiting for them since no one left the auditorium before they finished their performance. Their songs were chanted by the audience, so much loaded with alcohol and other substances. And what struck me most is that they knew all the letters, despite the youth of the majority.

Saturday arrived and I so did but half one hour late to my appointment with the Young Flamencos´ Gala Finalists. It was at the Alameda Theater and the city that afternoon was going crazy because of many things: in addition to numerous weddings, typical from September, it was canonized a saint in the Olympic Stadium and by nearly 50,000 people attended. It was impossible to park so after an hour turning round, rendered and ready to go without my dose of flamenco, I found a site almost in front of the theater (oh my God) so I parked and faster to my destination. I lost the first performance, the flamenco singer Tamara Aguilera, but she repeated later and leave me in love with her powered voice that sang: `I dreamed that Seville is made from chocolate and candied pine nuts is the Giralda, the Torre del Oro is caramel and Guadalquivir river, Guadalquivir river the best quality anise´. Tamara sings up and extended her hands that seems to jump her voice better. Neither the applause of the audience get diminish her voice that also had power to honor Rocío Jurado and Lola Flores.

Seguro.
Time for the dance of the mastery of the malageño Moses Navarro. Three voices and two guitars accompanied him. His footwork vibrates the room while my body hair bristled and is wasn´t because of air conditioned. Moses didn´t just dance but interprets. The singers move freely around the stage in a head to head with the dancer that is almost a pair of red boots that pull an obedient body here and there. Hundreds of eyes shape a radiant excited and amazement halo . Pain and pleasure; passion and joy; red, black and purple velvet. Ringing of castanets. I remember the Gibraltarian designer Galliano. He would enjoy this show. For sure.

And it's the turn to Francisco León and his guitar, the first issue of his first performance is dedicated to one Rondeña that go on by Fiestas and ends up in the company of other instruments thar accompanyin his guitar. And when the next theme come to secene a musician with a bass, the expectation rises. "How much modern are this young flamenco people" said a man from the audience, and I only can add admiration during his two performances. And that blue background behind them that pulled me to fly to other shocking realities full of gulls that guide me towards the sea, always the sea, and the same destiny. My origins breathing yet, along the beaches of Cadiz where, by the way, the artist comes from.--------------
