Lebrijano + the García Márquez´s magic realism

Corriendo, corriendo, corriendo.

Running, running, running. So I came to my first appointment with the Biennial of Flamenco of Seville at the Teatro Lope de Vega and I finally arrived before El Lebrijano. Although I know it wasn´t because of him but by the time it took the people there to seat between greeting and greeting. As I was single, I began to take pictures at the theater. An architectural jewel that was born out of the Iberoamerican Exhibition celebrated in Seville in 1929.

Fifteen minutes later than expected, curtains lifted and there were nine musicians and clappers on stage: Pedro Peña (guitar and nephew of El Lebrijano), Augustine Henke (percussion), Juan Reina and Juan Rincon (vocals), Redouane Kourrich (keyboards and vocals), Joseph Boud (d'arbuka) and Faiçal Kourrich (violin). An aperitif instrumental, with the cry of the guitar as protagonist, before you see appear at one side and wearing a white suit, that gives off a blinding light, the great expectations: Juan Peña El Lebrijano.

He begins by recalling songs from his latest album "When The Lebrijano sings water gets wet," a phrase that one day his friend Gabriel García Márquez devoted when he listened El Lebrijano and later it was the title of the cover of one of Lebrijano´s albums whose lyrics are taken of the novels: "No one writes the Coronel" and "One Hundred Years of loneliness" or some of his stories as "The incredible and sad story of ingenuous Eréndita and her heartless grandmother".

And The Lebrijano sings and "dances" in his chair, moving his hands like a madman. The left settled in his waist while the right one is waving on an empty space meanwhile hold the peak of his jacket that accompanies him obedient. You close your eyes and that music make you smell the sea. That one  which is between the coast of Cadiz and Morocco. It transports you to other lands that seems very close by that mixture of sounds.

Juan Peña is the father of Arab-Andalusian musical fusion and that -much of what has been written and that earned him so much rejection time ago between the flamenco purists- it is a sentence when you listen to him. The Master (in capitals) directs the musicians to follow him obedient even from backstage, constantly going back and forth across the stage. Restless man, despite his years, radiates uninhibited energy which flows into the pit from which a male voice yell: "John, you're the greatest" and he, humble nature, says: "I am not so much big indeed"- starting a ripple of laughter among the public. He continued: "twilight told the sun: you stay here, and a lamp that lay beneath the earth said, well, I´ll do what I can". More laughter and applause.

Innovador, sabio, alegre, humilde y... agradecido.

Innovative, knowledgeable, cheerful, humble and. .. grateful. Between songs exalting Castro Márquez, who is in the audience: "My friend, my brother" for all the good personal and professional that has made him and sings "Give me liberty" a theme that was created when the war in Bosnia and that now devotes to Sarkozy: "God rest his soul" -says the gypsy from Lebrija (Seville) while the audience broke into applause again. After his repertoire of songs from the Arabic Andalusian: Dreams in the air, the Prophet Isaiah, in the grove ... the artist is fired with pure flamenco songs, the last stitch to seal the memory of a recital of magical realism that flooded the grounds of Lope de Vega in Seville for an hour and a half.
