Mont Saint Michel.

Strategically placed between Normandy and Brittany there raises this "Marvel of the Western World" that passed of being a humble oratory in the VIIIth to Patrimony of the Humanity in 1979, and receiving more than three million visitors per year. The culprit of similar place was the Archangel Michel, chief of the celestial militia, who appeared a good day to Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, to ask him - we do not know in what terms – to build a place of adoration in the Mont-Tombe. The same one place that in 966 turned into a Community of Benedictine, of great influence in the XII and XIIIth.
This way it was like the basic oratory was transforming in Romanesque church, then increased to monastery thanks to private and royal donations, and being added Gothic constructions of 3 floors, in 16 years - The Merveille-. It came the XIVth with the Hundred Years' War when it was necessary to protect the abbey with walls strengthened with towers and in the XVth, the Romanesque choir changes - very spoilt - for another very ostentatious Gothic. And this way it was added, modifying, changing ... according to the needs and the taste of the century, managing to serve even as prison in the days of the French Revolution.
Today the friars and sisters of The Fraternités Monastiques of Jerusalem - that continue the Benedictine traditions created in 966- give the abbey a spiritual use from the year 2001 and the citizens of the Mont St-Michel benefit economically from the commercial result that implies receiving so much many tourism - with spiritual worries or not - a year.
On the other hand, the ingeniers go on working in order that the island continues afloat, in spite of the global warming and the own inertia of its tides - they reach a maximum speed of raise and descent of 30 km/h.- that are of The Europa's highest.

Curiosities
The monastic hierarchy is symbolized in three floors that the abbey has. So that the top floor - more nearby to the sky - is in that the monks had their small world that was debated between the church, the cloister and the reflectorio. In the intermediate floor it is where the abbot was receiving his guests of high range whereas the soldiers or guests of minor range, were received in the ground floor, where they were finding the warehouse and the chaplaincy.
When we come to St-Michel, after crossing the way that joins it to land, we had to leave the car in a parking where they warn you of that before the 20.00 h. You have to withdraw the car because it raises the tide and covers everything – it is important to remind it!!-.
When you cross the fortress after entering the Tower of the King, you have the sensation that you have entered another dimension: a medieval, paved street, it waits for you after crossing a dark arch ... and to rising among crowd, craftsmen, cider and souvenirs to come to the abbey while you are detaining to appear to its walls. The whole pleasure!.
After the "angelic one" - though archangel has more range, isn´t it? - experience, we went away to visit St-Malo in the afternoon, to return to the night and to discover the penumbras of this magic place. A site to return for sure...
